What drives a freight rate?
Three things, overwhelmingly: mode (air is priced per kilogram and moves fast; trucking is priced per mile or per hundredweight and moves slower), distance between origin and destination, and chargeable weight — for air freight specifically, that's the greater of actual weight and volumetric (dimensional) weight, not just what the shipment weighs on a scale.
Why this is an estimate, not a quote
Real freight rates move with fuel prices, available capacity, accessorial charges, and how badly a carrier wants that specific lane that week — no calculator can see any of that. This tool gives you a market-rate ballpark so you can sanity-check a budget before you commit to anything. The real number comes from posting the shipment and letting verified carriers bid on it directly.
